Driving My Brother From Despair

So it turns out that my brother was going to have to go to the clinic for a cyst removal and he was not happy about it. Despite the clinic assuring him that it was as quick and painless a procedure as he could hope for he was still a bag of nerves and miserable about it. As I had been given the task of taking him to and from the clinic I thought I would try to cheer him up by hiring a sweet ride to take us there and back.

Needless to say I am pretty much as close to clueless when it comes to cars as my brother is with women, but seriously, I don’t know much apart from how to drive them so I got in contact with the company and explained the situation and they said they would have it all sorted for me.

Needless to say when I turned up in a yellow Lambourghini it took his mind off the procedure and wonders never ceased there. When we stopped at some lights he started talking to the girls in the car next to us and bagged us a date for tonight. Here’s hoping they don’t get too mad when we turn up in his beaten up old pick up truck.

I was hopeful that it would work and it really did, he told me he barely even noticed the procedure as he was too busy thinking about the car, and the girls. That is him all dealt with now so we better get the car back and make ourselves look presentable for later.

A Different Kind of Gorilla Vehicle

Road trips are even more fun these days because I now have a power inverter that I use to power some of the electrical appliances I take with me. So no more do I have to worry about growing a beard, I just pack my electric razor; I don’t have to worry about my health either as I pack the best juicer for the road, my Breville Juice Fountain; In the winter, I don’t have to worry about getting cold either. Instead of keeping the engine running, I can now use a small fan heater I take with me.

A Trip to San Francisco

My friends and I decided last January to take a vacation before we all started back up at school again. We decided on going to San Francisco, a place I had been dying to go to for awhile now. But since we are poor college students, we went as cheap as we could, from the airplane tickets to staying in a hostel by Chinatown to save on costs.

However, the one way we inadvertently may have saved money and trouble is by not renting a car. My friend nearly had whiplash when she realized that we could not rent a car because we were under the age of 25. After all, we were 21-22 years old, enough to be an adult can rent a car.

Since we were forced to take the public transportation route, we got to go on the cable cars to Fisherman’s Wharf, which was a lot of fun. And since all the streets in San Fran are steep, we would have had such a hard time driving and parking anyway. Thanks to the stupid rules like the ones about car rentals!

Walt Disney World Speedway

The last time we went to Florida we stayed at the Caribe Cove Resort in Kissimee. We normally stay in a Disney resort but having done that quite a lot we thought we’d make this trip more about the alternative things to theme parks.

One thing that my husband enjoyed doing was the Richard Petty Driving Experience at the Walt Disney World Speedway. If you fancy experiencing the thrill of driving a NASCAR at speeds of up to 160 mph around a professional track then give this a go. It will really get your adrenalin going. If you don’t want to drive on your own that’s fine. You can ride with a professional driver instead.

Flippin’ the Bird

This past Friday, I flipped off not one, but two drivers on my way home from work. Where I live flipping the bird to motorists is not a really common occurance. I learned that little trick when I lived in Chicago.

I moved to Chicago when I was 22 and lived there for about four years. I can remember when I first moved there, I would get upset when people would flip me off. After a while, I could give the finger with the best of them. Unfortunately, when I would visit back home, people didn’t take kindly to getting flipped off. I guess they didn’t realize that in Chicago, you just expect to be flipped off.

What I don’t get is how people can get pissed off at you when you honk and flip them off, when it’s blatantly their fault, and they are doing something so completely stupid. They totally deserve the finger. Unless there is some rule that beat up minivans are allowed to pull out in front of a line of traffic, which is going 60 miles an hour, making us all slam on our brakes, just to drive two feet and make a left hand turn. I must have missed that day in Drivers Ed. Anyways, sometimes you see these morons driving 25m/ph on 45 speed limit, sometimes you’ll get several of them literally blocking all the lanes & creating an insane traffic, it makes you so mad you feel like you are developing some type of psychological disorders sitting in the car yelling insults at these idiots, but the best part of their irritativeness is that they absolutely don’t care, they just keep driving their snail pace.

Anyways, it is what it is I guess, not like they are going to change their ways all of a sudden.

Cars Versus Wine

There are, of course a few great uses for an over sized garage.  Many of us like to be able to do some basic (at worst) work on our cars in our garage including oil changes and a few other basic maintenance routines.

Others of us have to do that outside because we’ve built a wine cellar in part of the garage, or at least taken part of it over for a wine refrigerator. Since my wine of the month club sends me two bottles each and every month, I need somewhere to store the wine that is both safe from my kids and a fairly consistent temperature-that means a wine fridge in my garage is pretty much the perfect spot.

If only I could have my wife park on the street so I could have some more space!

Good News!  Although I’m a big fan of sports cars and that’s where my true passion lies, I’m also a bit of a finance geek.  Why is this good news?  Because with the help of an amortization calculator I was able to purchase a new home with a four(!) car garage to park my sweet rides in.  This just goes to show that doing a bit of due diligence when it comes to finding a new home can be a real virtue as my patience is what lead to me finding this beautiful new home that was just within my price range.  Now all of my cars can stay indoors and out of the elements and I can stare at the beautiful new abode as I get home from work every day.  People have been calling me a car geek for years – I guess they can start calling me a house geek now too.  IF you ever want to chat about adjustable rate mortgages, loan amortization or variable public tax liens then just let me know!

The Advantages of Building a Garage

For some people the fact that their home does not have a garage does not bother them too much. They can leave the car parked in the yard next to the firewood rack and it will fare pretty well. Adding a garage extension would simply be too much of a bother and quite an expense.

The Annual Kirkland Washington Car Show

There are lots of collectors of vintage cars and they will tell you to a man that it is not a cheap hobby. If you want to get in on this game you need to know how to make money and save it because you will be needing lots of it.

Every year I go to the Kirkland Washington car show where they have a fantastic selection of muscle cars and antique cars from all over the area. It is the one time a year that these collectors who are mostly men, can get together and show off their babies. Just walking around talking to these guys you can tell that they do it all for the love of it and hardly anyone is trying to make a profit.

When the weather is nice, the people really flock to this event. It is refreshing to see machines that were built and are kept with such pride. Many of them are really antiques from the past and help tell our history. People love strolling through the many isles of automobiles looking at the glorious paint jobs and exquisite craftsmanship these cars have. It is a look into our past that people of all ages seem to enjoy.

The Kirkland car show has been going on for 9 years now and every year there are more cars. Even the bad economy doesn’t seem to have hampered the turnout of the car owners or the spectators. It is an event I look forward to every year and so does my whole family as it is a great way to spend an afternoon.

Well perhaps it’s tailored more for the European market but one of the best and longest running car shows is now available on the internet.  The show is called Top Gear and it covers regularly the latest and greatest of the worlds super cars.  Whether you’ve lusted after the class and power of a Bentley V8 Continental or fancy the lowdown on the new BMW 6 Series Grand Coupe then you’ll find it covered in the show by one of the fairly eccentric presenters.   Because they are a very high profile car show, possibly the most famous they get access to all the latest cars.  For instance I discovered from here that Honda are about to debut a next generation supercar at the 2012 North American International Auto show in January.

Travel and Back Pain

Do not to spend too much chitchat time in the morning. The longer you talk the deeper she tries to sink her hooks.You have to have a flat that gives you the kind of people only investors have. Because that’s what this is all about, giving the impression of long-term stability and an overwhelming sense of affluence. When women get an overdose of that kind of man, she can’t help herself and immediately wants to get him for her own. By any means necessary. The most important thing to remember is not to get too attached, just like your cars they could be here one day and gone the next. But the road will always be there stretching out before you with more cars and more women.

Driving In New Countries The Only Way To Travel

For every new country I visit I always try my best to rent a Jeep or a moped so I can see things that the normal tourist route wouldn’t normally allow. Now, I don’t always get to rent the type of sports cars I normally like to drive but as long as I am mobile I don’t mind too much. In fact one of my best experiences was driving a campervan across the length of New Zealand, the scenery was simply stunning and the country had a great feel and atmosphere to it. There are many things that can improve your driving experience no matter where you are, one thing in particular for me that helped was having an electronic cigarette. Obviously this is one for the smokers out there but an e cig can be beneficial in so many ways, for one you can smoke in the car without fear of it smelling, burning or subjecting passengers to passive smoking. The Next Best Thing to Driving Fast is Partying all Night

I love driving. Every weekend I get out on the open road, and yes, I break the speed limit; but, I try to do so without endangering anyone’s life. I would not drive fast in a residential area. I also never drink and drive. Lots of my buddies do. Where I’m from, it’s considered almost acceptable to start a 6 pack as you drive home from work. I like to keep my driving and my partying entirely separate.

The next biggest thrill to feeling the landscape shoot past you as you push down on the gas, is to go to an all night party. I recently cam back from a holiday in Thailand where they seem to have mastered the art of partying. The booze is cheap, licensing laws are ignored, the weather is great and lots of people are up for it. No more so than at the awesome Full Moon Party in Koh Phangan. It is held on a tropical island that is usually sleepy and quiet. However, once a month the place becomes inundated with party monsters. All along Haad Rin beach for days before the official event people are going for it. DJs pump out driving dance music and everyone has a great time. I’m from the USA where there is often violence where there is binge drinking, but in Thailand I saw none of that; just happy people. Lots of young people got to know each other a lot better if you catch my drift, and generally everyone was well behaved and respectful.

The best part was dancing all night on the evening of the full moon and then pausing to see the sun rise out of the ocean. It was an orange fireball that looked so close. The sky cracked into many colors. I felt on top of the world, just like when I’m driving and feeling at one with my car. It was an irreplaceable moment.

Road Trip Adjustments

After 7 months of planning a road trip for me and my sisters everything was ready to go. We rented a nice car, packed our bags, and loaded up on snack food. What more could 4 girls ask for?

Little did I know in a matter of hours I would be surrounded by  traffic accident claims and police officers. There we were minding our own business when all of a sudden a huge semi-truck crossed the center lines. My sister swerved to get out the way and hit a tree.

Thankfully, all of us were ok but we could not say the same thing about the rental car. Luckily for us, the car rental place was able to give us a new car within a few hours. We were back on the road and only had to make a few adjustments to the plans of our trip. All and all a rough start turned into great memories.

The Next Best Thing to Muscle Cars: ATVs

I have a muscle car. It’s a brute of a thing and I love feeling the exhilaration of putting my foot down on the gas and feeling the kick of the engine, and the jerk of acceleration. I can’t live without this feeling once in a while.  I work hard and I need my release by getting out on the open road. I know it sounds kind of sexual – it might well be. I don’t place too much stock in psycho-babble. I don’t hurt anyone; I don’t have a gun; I don’t cheat on my wife; and I don’t do drugs, just fast cars.

I recently took my family on holiday to Thailand. They love going to tropical beaches, swimming in the sea, trying spicy food and visiting tourist sites. We went to the Thai island of Koh Phangan. It’s apparently famous for its Full Moon Party and its unspoiled beaches. It was very hot and the beach we were staying at, Thong Nai Pan Noi, I think was indeed very beautiful.

After 2 days of swimming in the sea and having Thai massages, I was bored witless.

The next morning I took a shared taxi into the main town on Koh Phangan, Thongsala. They had some jeeps and motorbikes for hire.  I was going to rent a scrambler motorbike when I saw a three wheel bike. I’ve never ridden an All Terrain Vehicle or ATV before. It didn’t look like it could go very fast, but it intrigued me.

I took the ATV out and gave it a good test drive on some of the roughest roads on the island. There was no shortage of these. The dirt roads full of holes and ruts presented a good challenge to my powers of concentration as a driver. The jungle scenery provided a great back drop. In short I loved it. I rented the ATV for the next 3 days. While my family spent their time working on their tans I got to see lots of obscure parts of the island – waterfalls, small temples, snakes on the road.
