June 2000 Feature Article in:
4-Wheel ATV Action Magazine
 |
We'd like to thank 4-Wheel
ATV Action Magazine for the article they
wrote, and the time they spent thrashing about on the Gorilla.
Click on the magazine title above to
order a June issue or to go to their website.
(Think about it - an ATV magazine
testing an electric quad would be like a hot rod magazine testing
the new VW Bug. They could-a squashed us.)
Instead, we found the editors to be very open-minded
and objective journalists, and very enthusiastic about the electric
Gorilla Quad.
Thanks, editors WBGO and Don, we
hope that you enjoyed the day near 6-Flags Magic Mountain as
much as we did.
|
|
Here's some "quotes" from the magazine
article, and some of their "ATV Action Ratings":
| "world's
first adult-sized electric quad."
"the Gorilla is incredibly simple to
operate."
"the world's lightest action thumb
throttle."
"the most amazing powerband in ATVing."
"Now, hit the throttle and get another big
surprise. The power delivery of an electric motor is all it's
cracked up to be."
"After three hours of run time, which
included much stopping and starting for photos, plus wide-open
riding and truck pulling, the charge level in the three batteries
had dropped by only about 25%." |
"
. . . we
did two simple experiments."
"First we rode up a very steep ramp, let the
machine freewheel backwards, then pinned the throttle. The
Gorilla instantly changed direction - amazing for a 500-pound
quad! Were it not for the weight, it might have wheelied
over!"
"Next we hooked one end of a heavy tow strap
to the Gorilla and the other to a 4000 lb Toyota T100 4X4 . . .
starting on a decently steep uphill grade. The instant we
applied the juice, the truck started moving. We were able to
pull the truck about 75 yards uphill before the circuit breaker on
the quad popped. . . Amazing!"
|
The
Gorilla got 5 star (top) ratings in the following categories:
|
Startup ease
Overall power
Overall handling (pavement)
Moderate speed turning precision
Turning stability
Crawl-speed turning diameter
Steering ease
Hillclimbing
Overall ease of use
Lack of vibration
Quietness
Handlebar/seat/footrest location
Hand control ease
Overall design |

Press Release
Gorilla Vehicles is proud to announce their newest venture
in the electric vehicle field:
The Gorilla Quad
- a multi-purpose "people
friendly" utility vehicle.
|
|
~
The Gorilla is the first electric ATV
(All
Terrain Vehicle)
|
|
|
|
~
The
Gorilla
is the first utility vehicle with a one piece, drop-over, hi-impact,
color impregnated, plastic body.
Never dents, rusts, or needs
paint.
Indestructible
Stuff
just like the plastic kayaks and canoes, (Not
Fiberglass).
(The body not only protects
the driver and vehicle, but also provides a safety cushion for accidents
with property and pedestrians.)

The Gorilla
is the first electric vehicle that competes price-wise with its gas
counterparts
(gas powered ATVs and industrial carts).
|
|
|
|
~
The
Gorilla is the first ATV with cup holders.
As reported in the April 2000
and June 2000 issue of
4-Wheel
ATV Action magazine;
" - - and cup holders (the first we've seen on an ATV!)."
|
|
|
The Gorilla was designed to move people and cargo, in and around
areas, where people work or play. Different versions of the vehicle travel at 12
to 18 Mph, but will just as easily travel
at less than walking speeds with its smooth electronic controls. It travels 25
to 35 miles, on a 20 to 30 cent charge.
The hi-impact, color-impregnated, plastic body is not just for good looks, it
is also a safety feature. In "people areas," the industry standard,
steel carts (with their hard and sharp edges) could pose safety
hazards.
Some Gorilla utility uses include: deliveries, maintenance, and security
patrols at commercial and institutional settings, such as; shopping malls,
resorts, college campuses, all types of parks, nurseries, exhibition centers,
and other large commercial complexes.
Recreational uses of the Gorilla include
rentals at tourist areas and parks, a one-person golf cart, and just
getting around large areas like neighborhoods and gated communities.
The Gorilla is clean and well-mannered. With its electric motor,
the Gorilla is silent and smooth in operation, and emits no fumes, air
pollution, heat pollution, or fire hazards.
The Gorilla comes standard with
many innovative safety features besides the plastic body: a ~6 minute
timed system shut-down when not being driven, and a charger
interlock (cannot be driven when plugged into the wall). Other safety
features include safety grip hand and foot areas, an easily accessible hand
parking brake, horn, back-up alarm, and a pedestrian alarm
(option).
The Gorilla is available with a full-line of accessories to help in
specific applications. Rear cargo handling accessories include: the
Gorilla Rack (short or long), a short bed, a long bed, and a plastic storage
box. Other accessories include: a tow hitch, front basket, hi-visibility safety
pole, 107 db back-up alarm
(for industrial use),
pin hitch
(so many agricultural implements can
be uses), and several headlight/taillight options.
The Gorilla has a built-in Smart charger and battery status
indicator. It can charge and monitor several different sizes and type of
batteries from any 110 volt outlet (export models are available).
Company History:
Gorilla Vehicles
is a wholly owned subsidiary of Doran Motor Company
Inc., formed
to develop and market "people friendly" electric vehicles for
commercial and recreational markets. Doran Motor Company developed electric cars (the
Doran Electric) in the late 1980s, and developed and sold the EcoScoot electric
motorscooter in the early 1990s. (The motorscooter is now manufactured and
sold by ________________.) Rick Doran,
the company's founder, worked
for three different (now) competitors in the commercial and
industrial electric vehicle industry. He is also known for winning several
national electric vehicle racing championships.
