Needless to say I am pretty much as close to clueless when it comes to cars as my brother is with women, but seriously, I don’t know much apart from how to drive them so I got in contact with the company and explained the situation and they said they would have it all sorted for me.

I recently cam back from a holiday in Thailand where they seem to have mastered the art of partying. It is held on a tropical island that is usually sleepy and quiet. However, once a month the place becomes inundated with party monsters. All along Haad Rin beach for days before the official event people are going for it. DJs pump out driving dance music and everyone has a great time. I’m from the USA where there is often violence where there is binge drinking, but in Thailand I saw none of that; just happy people. Lots of young people got to know each other a lot better if you catch my drift, and generally everyone was well behaved and respectful.

The best part was dancing all night on the evening of the full moon and then pausing to see the sun rise out of the ocean. It was an orange fireball that looked so close. The sky cracked into many colors. I felt on top of the world, just like when I’m driving and feeling at one with my car. It was an irreplaceable moment.

Little did I know in a matter of hours I would be surrounded by  traffic accident claims and police officers. There we were minding our own business when all of a sudden a huge semi-truck crossed the center lines. My sister swerved to get out the way and hit a tree.

Thankfully, all of us were ok but we could not say the same thing about the rental car. Luckily for us, the car rental place was able to give us a new car within a few hours. We were back on the road and only had to make a few adjustments to the plans of our trip. All and all a rough start turned into great memories.

However, the one way we inadvertently may have saved money and trouble is by not renting a car. My friend nearly had whiplash when she realized that we could not rent a car because we were under the age of 25. After all, we were 21-22 years old, enough to be an adult can rent a car.

Since we were forced to take the public transportation route, we got to go on the cable cars to Fisherman’s Wharf, which was a lot of fun. And since all the streets in San Fran are steep, we would have had such a hard time driving and parking anyway. Thanks to the stupid rules like the ones about car rentals!

I recently took my family on holiday to Thailand. They love going to tropical beaches, swimming in the sea, trying spicy food and visiting tourist sites. We went to the Thai island of Koh Phangan. It’s apparently famous for its Full Moon Party and its unspoiled beaches. It was very hot and the beach we were staying at, Thong Nai Pan Noi, I think was indeed very beautiful.

After 2 days of swimming in the sea and having Thai massages, I was bored witless.

The next morning I took a shared taxi into the main town on Koh Phangan, Thongsala. They had some jeeps and motorbikes for hire.  I was going to rent a scrambler motorbike when I saw a three wheel bike. I’ve never ridden an All Terrain Vehicle or ATV before. It didn’t look like it could go very fast, but it intrigued me.

I took the ATV out and gave it a good test drive on some of the roughest roads on the island. There was no shortage of these. The dirt roads full of holes and ruts presented a good challenge to my powers of concentration as a driver. The jungle scenery provided a great back drop. In short I loved it. I rented the ATV for the next 3 days. While my family spent their time working on their tans I got to see lots of obscure parts of the island – waterfalls, small temples, snakes on the road. It was a great vehicle experience and something cultural for me.

It was one of the best holidays I’ve had.
